The Wine Marathon at Palić is the most fun wine-and-sport event in the region, as experienced by over 1,000 runners who, on Saturday, September 21, took part in the half-marathon Wine Race and the ten-kilometer Enjoyment Run. Competitors from 16 countries ran through the vineyards and refreshed themselves with wine from the best Palić wineries.
At this year’s event, runners from multiple continents participated, coming to Serbia for the Wine Marathon. They came from Japan, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, the USA, Brazil, Russia, the United Kingdom, Finland, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Poland, while traditionally, besides Serbia, the largest number of runners came from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Hungary.
The winner of the half-marathon Wine Race was Miklós Bruner from the Hajduk MT Kula club and in the women’s category, Ines Jozić from Croatia.
The winners of the Enjoyment Run were Katarina Stojković from the MTS Serbia team and József Nyári from Hungary.
In addition to being fast and physically prepared for the race, many participants also put effort into having very creative costumes, making the competition fierce. Still, the award for the best individual costume went to the marathon’s most popular ‘water polo player,’ Mr. Aleksandar Ormoš from Zrenjanin, while the award for the best group costume went to a group of 25 participants from Belgrade who dressed up as ‘zombies.’
After the race, all participants and visitors continued at the Great Terrace with wine tastings and local gastronomic specialties, while the Subotica band Selected provided excellent entertainment. Many participants took part in engaging wine workshops, sailed on the Wine Boat, went on wine picnics, and a fun barrel-rolling competition was also organized, accompanied by lots of cheering and laughter.
Participants of this year’s Wine Marathon joined a fundraising campaign for the construction of a parent house in Belgrade for children with cancer by downloading the ‘Take a Step’ app, which recorded the kilometers completed during the marathon. These kilometers are monetized by Serbian companies and donated to the National Association of Parents of Children with Cancer.
The Wine Marathon is a unique event that combines sport, wine, gastronomy, and music in a fun way, providing enjoyment for all the senses, as best evidenced by the photographs, which also serve as the best invitation for next year.
