The European Birdwatching Weekend is an international event held every year on the first weekend of October. The main organizer is BirdLife International, a global network of organizations dedicated to the conservation of birds and nature.
The aim of this event is to raise awareness, through observing and showcasing the autumn migration of birds, of the importance of protecting birds and nature, as well as the challenges facing nature around the world.
The event was first held in October 1993, when nearly 22,000 people from 17 countries took part in the initiative. Last year, the event was held at 834 locations, with around 27,000 participants observing more than 2.8 million birds.
This program has an important educational role and aims to involve as many people as possible, but its primary objective is to collect data on the autumn migration of birds at the European level. Since the event is held every year, the data collected can be compared over time, allowing changes in the size and status of bird populations to be monitored.
The “Palić-Ludaš” Public Enterprise, together with the “Riparia” Nature Lovers’ Association, has been participating in this initiative for more than 20 years. In addition to birdwatching, the organizations contribute to the program through scientific research and bird ringing, carried out in protected areas around Subotica.
As part of this weekend’s program, on Sunday, October 4, nature enthusiasts will have the opportunity to take part in an educational walking tour starting at the “Ludaš” Visitor Centre, following the shore of Lake Ludaš to the location where a bird-ringing demonstration will be held.
During the walk, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the protected Ludaš area, different bird species, their migrations and biology, as well as other fascinating aspects of the rich natural world of this area through direct experience in nature.
The walk will begin at 9:00 a.m. in front of the “Ludaš” Visitor Centre, located at 12 Prespanska Street, Hajdukovo. Participants will walk approximately 1.2 kilometres each way. After reaching the designated location and attending the bird-ringing demonstration, participants will return to the Visitor Centre along the same route.
The walk is expected to finish at around 11:30 a.m.
This is a wonderful opportunity to experience Ludaš in a different way – through walking, learning, and a direct encounter with nature and its inhabitants.
